Highlights of the Week

Inter Miami 2:3 LA Galaxy

The Inter Miami game vs LA Galaxy was the marquee matchup of the week on Sunday. Gary Neville was coaching his first home game at DRV PNK Stadium.

Inter scored their first goal right at the end of the first half when Robbie Robinson stroked the ball into the back into the net scoring from a great breakaway run and an unselfish pass from Gonzalo Higuain. Javier Hernandez (Chicharito) equalized in the 61st minute with an amazing turn and a quick left-foot shot.

Higuain put Inter Miami back on top six minutes later with a penalty, only his send goal for the club. Hernandez tied the game up again with a poachers goal in the 73rd minute. Sacha Kljestan turned the game on its head in the 80th minute with a pass/shot off the post. The Inter Miami defense were at 6’s and 7’s with Sebastian Leitget’s layoff to Kljestan.

Inter Miami pushed hard at the end of the game and had a couple of chances from the Higuain brother. It was not to be Gary Neville’s day as Greg Vanney won his first game as LA Galaxy’s manager.

Chicago Fire 2:2 New England Revolution

The Chicago Fire got off to a fast start in front of 7,000 fans at Soldier Field with early goals from Robert Beric in the 5th minute, and Luka Stojanovic in the 11th minute. The lead was short-lived when Bruce Arena’s team leveled the game with first-half goals from Adam Buksa and Gustavo Bou. Buksa scored from a free header from a corner kick and Bou snuck in behind the flat-footed Fire defenders with a nice flick. The Rev’s missed an open goal in the dying minutes of the game when Kizza’s header came off the post.

CF Montréal 4:2 Toronto FC

This all Canadian battle saw two new manager playing their game on the road in Ft. Lauderdale as both teams are displaced due to COVID-19 restrictions. CF Montréa took the bragging rights in this high-scoring affair in the Florida heat. Mason Toye opened the scoring in the 2nd minute with a curling right-foot shot. Romell Quioto made it 2::0 in the 24th minute with a stunning goal where he ran from his own half and scored from a narrow-angle. Marky Delgado brought TFC back into the game and made it 2:1 from the penalty spot just before half-time with a retaken penalty. The first kick was one of the worst penalty kicks I have ever seen. They were lucky to get a mulligan.

The ex-Spurs player Victor Wanyama scored from a header to make it 3:1 early in the second half. Djordje Mihailovic made it 4:1 with 20 minutes to go with a sharp finish. Richie Laryea pulled one back in the dying minutes for Toronto but it was too late. Wilfried Nancy came out on top in his first derby game against Chris Armas.
